Vote? Yea! Selfie? Nay!

Unless you've been living beneath a rock or in a similarly isolated circumstance here in the UK, you cannot have failed to have noticed that the nation goes to the polls in a General Election tomorrow. The Photocritic team would like to encourage everyone eligible to go cast a ballot, even if it's spoiled with the words 'You're all a bunch of twazzocks.' However, we think it's also important to point out that photography around polling stations is a tricky thing and best avoided.

While it isn't illegal to take photos in or around a polling station or of your own ballot slip, it is illegal to compromise the legitimacy of the secret ballot. You absolutely cannot divulge how someone else has voted and neither should you reveal the unique ballot identification number on a voting slip, whether that's your own or someone else's. For this reason, photography inside polling stations is strongly discouraged and you might well see 'No Photography' signs around them.

If you want to convey that you've performed your civic duty via a photo, it's best to do it outside the polling station. You might well not be hauled off to the clink immediately for breaching the rules, but better stay on the safe side.
